Have you just been fitted for a new pair of hearing aids? Often, with a new pair of hearing aids, it takes time to feel comfortable. There are several tips that you can use in order to adjust to new hearing aids.
The first tip is to make sure that you give yourself plenty of time. The hearing aids are going to take some time for you to get accustomed to them. You cannot expect the brain to remember how to identify, hear, and interpret every sound as soon as you use the hearing aid. Most of the time, they are going to feel a little bit off inside of your ears. Therefore, you don’t need to be worried if it takes a few days to get comfortable.
The second tip is to start off small. In order to acquire your new hearing skills, it is going to take some practice to do. When you are using the hearing aid the first time after suffering from hearing loss, it is a good idea to start off only wearing them for a few hours at a time. If it gets to a point where you feel like you are too overwhelmed then you can remove them. But each day you need to try to wear them for a little bit longer.
The third tip is to read aloud. Most of the time, before you get the hearing aid, then people are going to tell you to stop shouting all of the time. It will be natural for you to talk loudly when you are experiencing hearing loss, but the hearing loss treatment will help you to regulate the volume of your voice. This is good habit to read to yourself while you are wearing the hearing aid. This is because you will be able to determine the right volume to your voice, but it will also help you to recognize sounds a lot better.
The fourth tip is to ask your friends and family for help. This is something that you are definitely not going to want to do during the process of adjusting to the hearing aid. This is one of the best ways that you will be able to practice your speaking in a group where you are going to be comfortable. Therefore, your brain will be able to learn all of the associations between the words and the sounds of the words. It is best to practice with the people who know you well because you will be able to identify their familiar voice.
The fifth tip is to keep a hearing journal. This is the best way that you will be able to keep track and write down any of the noises that you hear with the hearing loss treatment that might irritate or bother you. For example, the ticking of the clock might be too loud and will probably annoy you after a few days of listening to it. If you are struggling to hear some of the conversations inside of a crowded restaurant, then you are going to need to write this down in your journal.
The sixth tip is to make sure that you are keeping realistic goals. Therefore, you are going to need to think about the phone conversations that you might have. Even when you have a good phone, then there might be a difference between the sound of a voice being transmitted over the phone line. This is also true about the sounds that you are going to hear though the hearing aid. You will experience the sounds a little bit different than before you lose your hearing. It is okay to celebrate any of the improvements that you have with your hearing.
The seventh tip is to make sure that you do not adjust the volume of the hearing aids too much. Most of the time, if you have a quality hearing aid, then it is going to adjust to the different environments that you will need to hear in. This means that you are not going to have to adjust your hearing aid as much. It can be very tempting to turn down the volume when you go to a restaurant or down when you enter the library. Avoid doing this so that you don’t damage your hearing more.
